"Serotonin" is a sarcastic, frightening, funny, lewd, offensive, and politically incorrect novel about the decline experienced by Europe, Western civilization, and humanity as a whole. After defeats in both professional and love life, the aging hedonist and agricultural expert Florent-Claude Labrouste concludes that he is "dying of sadness." His relationship with his current girlfriend is at a dead end, his career likewise, and it's hard to imagine daily life without a regular dose
of medication. Suffocating from loneliness, consumerism, hedonism, and exhausted by the city, Labrouste decides to return to Normandy, where he once promoted local cheeses, fell in love, and even—so it seems now—was happy. However, the farmers there, like him, long for the impossible—the return of simpler and more humane times, and some are ready to fight for it in the literal sense. Translated from French by Dens Dimiņš.
