When Latvia gained independence after World War I and introduced its own currency system, Rihards Zariņš, one of the coin designers, chose the drawing of the large coat of arms of Latvia for the obverse of the 5 lats silver coin. This was crafted in 1921, using the state coat of arms project created by graphic artist Vilhelms Krūmiņš, and for the reverse, the image of a Latvian maiden.
