For the teacher and artist, Miervalds Ķemers (1902–1980), a graduate of Vilhelms Purvītis' Landscape Workshop and the master's confidant, a long, creatively intense but undervalued and publicly unrecognized life was destined, as under Soviet regime conditions, he remained faithful to both of his life's main choices – serving God and serving art. The legacy left by Ķemers – approximately 3000 paintings, studies, and drawings – experienced contradictory interpretations and paradoxical assumptions after the artist's death, which elevated the talented painter to the pinnacle of recognition and then plunged him into a pit of complete denial, making him a hostage to his fate. The book allows one to trace the twists and turns of the little-known landscapist's biography and provides insight into his created artworks from three different perspectives. Art historian Ojārs Spārītis, who personally knew Miervalds Ķemers at the end of his life and, even under Soviet regime conditions, tried to achieve at least partial recognition of the artist, explains the painter's life and art's vicissitudes within the context of the era. Art historian Signe Irbe has deeply researched the landscapist's biography and works, based on historical sources and art analysis. Meanwhile, in autobiographical notes, Ķemers himself tells his life story without intermediaries. The publication is a dedication to the 120th anniversary of Miervalds Ķemers and the 150th anniversary of his teacher Vilhelms Purvītis. The book is new, unread.
