The first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Lagerlöf, with this novel in 1891, affirmed her place in Swedish literature. Gösta Berling is the main character, a rural pastor whose craving for alcohol and carelessness drives him to ruin. He falls in with a dozen vagabond Swedish cavaliers and engages in a power struggle with the province's wealthiest woman.

The book features a Faustian theme related to a possible deal with the Devil. It also explores social issues such as poverty and depression, as well as elements of myth and humorous love stories.
